Mike was born on September 11, 1951 in New Glasgow to the late Lorraine (Zwicker) and Jack Nugent. His siblings, Pug (d), Vi (d), George, Bonnie, Karen, Heather and twins Brent (d) and Brian. Not only were they family, they were friends and loved each other.
We've heard many funny stories, around many smoke filled kitchen tables through the years of their antics, over many games of Yahtzee . Through his sister Bonnie, he met one of his best friends, uncle Jim. Since Susan passed in 2022, their bond deepened. Dad thought uncle Jim was "the smartest man I know" Once Mike met Susan (MacKay) his life and purpose began. They had 3 daughters, Cathy, Janice (Andre), Donna and he loved and protected them fiercely.
Mike was supportive and became involved in anything his girls wanted to do. Many years ago in Stellarton, there was an advertisement at school about baseball registration that evening. Dad took us up to register and once he found out it was boys only, things changed. With the help of some volunteers, Mike was a driving force and Stellarton Girls Softball was born, now known as Stellarton Area Girl's Softball Association. Not only our Dad, he became our coach in softball and ringette. He made many friends throughout the years through his girls sports. Mike never met a stranger, easily sharing conversations with anyone he would meet.
Along came his "true joy" his grandchildren and made him "Bubby", Christie, Tyler, Michael (d), Haley, Mariah, Ryan, Hannah and Kaidan. Bubby was their go to person for anything, solid, dependable and always willing to help them with advice. Their bond unbreakable. Then along came the greats, Carmen, Peyton, Tanner, Silas, Daylon, Michael, Piper, Kaisyn, Nora, Maddy, Hunter, Zayne and Macey. his role of Bubby multiplied joyfully.
Mike met many great friends through his 74 years. Most notably Rick Ashton, his "blood" brother. Through 70 years their friendship never waned, through time or distance. Always steady and strong for each other right to Dads last days. He had friends at "Billy's", "the club" and played many years in Pictou County Snooker and pool leagues. He enjoyed those friendships and camaraderie.
Mike had many in-laws, nieces, nephews, chosen son Jamie Melanson(nephew), cousins and friends who he loved dearly. Mike passed away October 11, 2025 in Palliative Care, Aberdeen Hosptial, doing it "his way" and fighting until the end. His death leaves a huge hole in our hearts, he was the best Dad and Bubby we could have ever asked for.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 17th, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at H.W. Angus Funeral Home with service on Saturday, October 18th at 11 am at H.W. Angus Funeral Home. Cremation to follow after service. Donations may be made to Pictou County Foodbank. We would like to thank Fourth floor staff and Palliative Care team.
