Surrounded by family J. Russell MacIntosh, age 88 of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025 at the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in New Glasgow and having grown up in Piedmont he was the only child of the late Lawrence and Helen (MacKay) MacIntosh.
Russell aimed to serve and to be involved. At First Presbyterian Church in New Glasgow he served in many capacities including as an elder and in earlier years one of the parent leaders for Young Peoples. He enjoyed many years with the New Glasgow Fire Department and volunteered with many Town of New Glasgow initiatives including Glasgow Square, and the early days of the New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee. Across the county he and his wife, Marian, worked tirelessly with the Pictou County Branch of the Kidney Foundation. Who remembers the garage sales, Fall Peanut Campaign and being asked to canvass or to be a captain for the March Campaign?
Many may know Russell as owner/operator of Century Saw & Marine, first with his friend and business partner Brad Smith and later with his wife Marian and their family. Russell was always grateful for the community support shown his business since 1967.
Predeceased by his loving wife, Marian, Russell is survived by his children Joan MacIntosh (Anthony Conway), New Glasgow; Jane (Anthony) McDow, Stellarton; Ruth Anne MacIntosh, New Glasgow; Glenn MacIntosh, New Glasgow; grandsons Ben McDow, Halifax and Sam McDow, Stellarton; and family German Shepherd, Ice. He is also survived by his cousin Audrey (MacIntosh) MacLaughlin; aunts Anna, Evelyn and Mackay family cousins; and MacKenzie sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and their families.
Russell’s family truly appreciates the dedication of the employees at Century Saw & Marine as well as the care and support provided to him by the VON, Aberdeen Hospital staff, and past and present doctors including Dr. Forbes and Dr. Rivera.
Visitation will be at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, Saturday, September 13th, 2-4pm and 7-9pm. Russell’s funeral service will be held in HW Angus Chapel, New Glasgow, on Sunday, September 14th at 2pm with long-time family friend Audrey Cameron officiating. Following the reception at the funeral home burial will be at the Piedmont Cemetery. Any consideration of a donation in memory of Russell may be made to the Aberdeen Health Foundation Dialysis Unit Pictou, Pictou County Food Bank or a charitable organization of your choice.
