It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, and friend Darrell Anthony MacInnis on August 13, 2025. Darrell was a man of wisdom, kindness, and unwavering guidance. He was a mentor to many, and admired by all who knew him.
Born on September 1, 1954, in New Glasgow, NS, Darrell spent most of his life in Trenton. He worked at Quality Cleaners for an incredible 42 years, where his loyalty, dedication, and camaraderie left a lasting mark. Even after retiring, he stayed connected with his work family.
Darrell’s warmth and generosity touched not only his family but countless friends. He was always just a phone call away, quick with a listening ear and a dry wit that could have a room laughing, often without him realizing just how funny he was.
A man of many passions, Darrell’s love of history, music, and understanding how things worked showcased his boundless curiosity and knowledge. Whether it was history, electronics, or fixing something in a pinch, he was truly a jack of all trades.
Darrell cared deeply for animals and supported causes close to his heart. One in particular was animal preservation efforts. He gave to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, and countless other charities. Over the years, he lovingly cared for his own pets and those of friends and family, delighting in their companionship and playful nature.
He is survived by his siblings, Gary, Bonnie (Richard), Calvin (Christie), Peggy (Terry), Bernadine (Tom), Alex Jr. (Marie-Anne), Duane (Alison) and his chosen sister Loriann Forrest (John); as well as his many cherished nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews, who will remember him with love and affection.
Darrell was predeceased by his partner, Barbara Hollis; his parents, Margaret Genetta (Ross) MacInnis and Alexander MacInnis; his sister, Mary Ellen MacInnis-Goyetche; and his brother, Simon “Norman” A. MacInnis (Donna), his pets, Shadow and Mama Cat.
We are deeply grateful to the medical staff of Palliative Care, VON, and Continuing Care for making it possible for Darrell to remain at home surrounded by family. A special thank you to Lynn Miller for her support and kindness.
As per Darrell’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held for immediate family. We thank Fr. Bernard MacAdam for his visit and blessings. Darrell had a deep faith, and we were so pleased Fr. Bernie came. Donations in Darrell’s memory may be made to the SPCA.
The following is a poem written by our sister Mary in 1973:
SOUL
My soul is now free,
no pain shall I bear
To rest brings pleasure to me.
The pain I suffered
forever is gone,
Now peace for eternity.
No one can explain
the way that I feel,
to leave my family behind.
It’s better for them,
They suffered too
I am being kind.
In days now I’m gone
tears will soon go,
Life shall be lived once more.
A happier place,
I know I shall see,
God can open death’s door.
