Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James (Jim) Francis Moriarty, who passed away suddenly at the age of 79 on Monday, April 7th, 2025. He was the beloved father to Gerald, his wife Mandy, and very proud Grampy Jim to Petra Moriarty. Born and raised in Port McNicoll, Ontario, Jim was the son of William and Mary Moriarty and brother to the late Mary Hatley and her husband Bob. He is survived by his brother, John Moriarty and his wife Delcie. Jim is predeceased by his wife, Brenda Moriarty (MacDonald) and sister-in-Laws Patsy, Doreen, and Willena, and brother-in-Laws Wayne & Lewie. Jim grew up by the water, a place that would come to shape his life and career. Jim began his sailing career at 18, on the S. S. Keewatin, a CPR passenger ship that sailed the Great Lakes, a family tradition. Jim’s brother John also started his sailing career on the Keewatain, their father was a CPR policeman & their grandfather maintained the CPR grounds and sheds. Jim’s navigation career began as a deckhand and a wheelsman with Upper Lakes Shipping. Following a move to the east coast, Jim pursued his marine navigation ticket and became a 2nd mate with Marine Atlantic, formerly CN. Jim married his wife Brenda in Newfoundland and settled in Merigomish, Nova Scotia. Together they proudly raised their son, Gerald. Jim spent many years volunteering with Pictou County Minor Hockey as a Trainer with Gerald’s teams & many others. In 1982, Jim found strength and purpose through Alcoholics Anonymous, embarking on a lifelong journey of service and quiet courage. He became a source of guidance and support for others, offering wisdom, compassion, and a steady hand to those navigating their own path to recovery. Jim never retired. He continued to mentor others as an independent advisor offering courses in safety. His love for the water continued as a member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary and time spent on his pleasure boat. As a proud Grampy Jim, he attended anything Petra was involved in. He especially loved her musical talents. Jim had a profound love for his family and friends and will be dearly missed. Cremation has been arranged by H. W. Angus Funeral Home. A service will be held Saturday, May 10th at 11am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Stellarton. Reception will follow the service in the Sister Catherine Steele Centre, 12 St. Bernard St., Stellarton, NS.
